Robbo's
blah cont.
..(announced at the Bowl gig) at the Hi Fi Bar.I was lucky enough to be able
to go to both. WOW MAN........what a BAND.....just BRILLIANT live. On the Sunday
at the Bowl, Melbourne turned on a gorgeous day and it was one of my life's
pleasures (so far) to sit on the grass with the sun setting and listen to the
delicious sounds and moods of Calexico with my darling fiance Lisa and our lovely
friend Tracey.
On the Monday night I invited my good friend Broc to meet me at the Hi Fi Bar
for a very special night. This was his introduction to Calexico, what a way
to start. Before I go on I must tell you how I was introduced to them. It was
thanks to Mike who gave me The Black Light album for Xmas 2000. I played
it for the first time during my recovery time after my hernia operation. Two
nurses had just given me a shot of pethadeine, I asked one of them to pass me
the portable CD player and my new CD. Well from the opening note I was taken
on an extrodinary journey/trip, so many wonderful textures, moods and feels.....I
WAS HOOKED (on Calexico, not pethadeine).I continued to play the CD 'til I passed
out (at least 2 1/2 times through). Now whenever I play that album I get a flashback
to that time....MARVELLOUS ...apart from the twitch in the hernia region! So
back to the Hi FI Bar, another memorable gig. A great turn out by Melbourne
and Calexico were fabulous, being able to play longer they we're able to perform
much more of their repertoire including some of the slower darker tunes...YUM.
This Band just grabs me and takes me away....TRULY INSPIRING! After the gig
I met and had a chat to drummer John Convertino and singer/guitarist Joey Burns
whom were both genuinely blown away by the reception they received in Melbourne.
They come across as very warm and passionate guys........I miss them already.
On a final Calexico note I would like to thank our friend Alan Howe, for it
was he who gave Mike his first Calexico CD.....THANKS AL!
Once again ENJOY the festive season and we'll see you at a Spectrum gig soon.
Cheers,
Robbo.
