BREATHING SPACE AS WELL
THE BRAND NEW SPECTRUM EP

Breathing Space As Well - Spectrum - Volcano Records VR005
This is the third
in the Breathing Space series of EPs, and its release was held up so we could add two songs in particular; Soul Man, and his refugee bro' Limbo Man. Soul Man was a project dear to my heart and is dedicated to one of the true legends of Oz (and Kiwi) soul music, Max Merritt. While it's true I've only come to know Max lately, our paths have intersected at pivotal times in my so-called career and I thought it fitting to pay homage to The Man while he's still around to enjoy it. Helping out on the stunning horn arrangement is Jimmie Sloggett who appears on Limbo Man - as well.. $15.00 + postage track list

BREATHING SPACE TOO EP

Breathing Space Too - Spectrum - Volcano Records VR004
This is the second
in the Breathing Space series of EPs, and its release was held up so we could add our most recent song, Xavier Rudd Is Not My Son, which answers the most frequent question I'm asked these days. Of the other six tracks, Gee Whiz and Hotels, Motels both feature the swinging sax stylings of Jimmy Sloggett, Sensible Shoes, one of two songs retrieved from the WHY catalogue, is enhanced by a psychedelic fiddle solo from the Malmsbury wizard, Nicolas Lyon, as well as an unexpected rap from Mike, rather reminiscent of the Beastie Boys - or is that Archie Bunker? $15.00 + postage track list

BREATHING SPACE EP

Breathing Space - Spectrum - Volcano Records VR003
After a trifling thirty five years,
Spectrum is back on the recording scene with this very tasty morsel, the first of an alleged quartet of Breathing Space EPs. Whether it's a smart marketing move, or simply getting the ball rolling after too long procrastinating, it's a relief to have something to talk about besides re-issues. Personally, I think there's a lot to like about this six-track EP, from the opening song Second Coming, a classic Spectrum live track, to the surprising and virtually unheard live Star Crazy (dedicated to the late Paul Hester). With guests including Tims Gaze and Neal. $15.00 + postage track list

MILESAGO

Milesago - Spectrum - Aztec Music AVSCD033
Well, after all the huffing and puffing,
the (double) album that everybody has been saying they're waiting for is finally here! And I can testify that Gil Matthews and Ted Lethborg have done another exquisite job in bringing this baby home. To say the packaging is lavish is an understatement, and, if anything, it underlines the visionary artwork done by Ian McCausland all those years ago. I won't attempt to explain the music, suffice to say that it goes places where few bands were even contemplating and remains a unique testament to the times. Check the track list. and the odd review. An extremely reasonable $30.00 + postage

SPECTRUM PART ONE

Spectrum Part One - Spectrum - Aztec Music AVSCD026
Something new at last!
Well, maybe not new new, but Aztec Music's Ted Lethborg and Gil Matthews have done their label's usual spiffy job re-presenting Spectrum's very first album with luxurious packaging and copious notes by Ian McFarlane, and more bonus tracks than there were tracks on the original vinyl version. A great commercial injustice has been righted with the inclusion of I'll Be Gone and Launching Place Parts One and Two. Gil Matthews has done marvels resurrecting the harmonica-less demo version of I'll Be Gone b/w You Just Can't Win from the original ancient acetate.track list read reviews $25.00 + postage

SPILL BLUES

Spill - Spectrum plays the Blues - Volcano Records VR002
SPTB's
next most recent offering sees Mike, Bill and Robbo tackle a bunch of blues’ standards with special guests Colin Hay and blues harp maestro Chris Wilson thrown in. "It should come as no surprise that Rudd and Putt would be able to come up with such a quality release - talent will always come out in the end. But here is an album that will drag in the long-time nostalgia buffs, the curious and, most importantly, the die-hard blues fans." read more Highly acclaimed and highly recommended! NO THINKING BLUES

No Thinking - Spectrum plays the Blues - Sound Vault SV0430
The first Spectrum Plays The Blues CD since Spill was released late last century, the first to be produced from Mike Rudd and Bill Putt's Accidental Music Studio, and the first to be distributed by Sound Vault Records, No Thinking varies the Spill formula only slightly, adding to the predictable core of blues tunes an eclectic collection of covers of tunes by Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Hank Williams, to name but a few. Most of the tracks were recorded at Ross Ryan's GI Recorders and Pete Dacy's Secret Sound Studio, with a couple of live favourites recorded at the Thredbo Blues Festival. LIVING ON A VOLCANO

Living On A Volcano - Mike Rudd & Bill Putt - Volcano Records VR001
The third most recent of Mike and Bill’s albums, it marks quite a departure from their previous work. It’s received glowing reviews and the feedback Mike and Bill have been getting from Volcano owners is extremely touching. Featuring lyrics by Mike’s late wife, Helen, it’s a laid-back, almost ambient album that will hardly leave your player, especially if you’re the forgetful type…

This classic Rudd/Putt collaboration is now back in stock after a long absence - make sure you vouchsafe your copy ASAP. $25.00 + postage listen to some tracks

A STRANGE FANTASTIC DREAM

A Strange Fantastic Dream - Ariel - Rare Vision RVSN-002
Lovingly re-mastered classic Ariel album on Spectrum’s own Rare Vision label with bonus track Red Hot Momma. As the Herald Sun's Pete Best said recently; "Ariel was to explore Rudd's progressive rock ambitions and this was their extraordinary first step. Tim Gaze was on board with Rudd's mate Bill Putt in perhaps their most powerful combination."

ROCK & ROLL SCARS

Rock & Roll Scars - Ariel - Rare Vision - RVSN-003
Again lovingly re-mastered Ariel album dedicated to the memory of the late Ariel drummer John Lee, with the bonus inclusion of the single Yeah Tonight. Some people think this is the definitive guitar band that Rudd and Putt had to this point - which is not saying much as it was the only guitar band they had to this point. It is true to say that the re-interpretations of the Spectrum /Murtceps material compare favourably with the originals, and the superb Abbey Road / Air Studios sound fairly leaps out of the speakers. $20.00 + postage

THE JELLABAD MUTANT

The Jellabad Mutant - Ariel - Rare Vision RVSN-004
The Ariel with Harvey James and John Lee demo'ed Rudd’s rock opera, The Jellabad Mutant, at EMI in 1974, only to have the project shelved. The session has been digitally re-mastered plus the single tracks I’ll Take You High and I Can’t Say What I Mean and a Double J live broadcast of the Mutant medley with Glyn Mason and Nigel Macara. With lavish background notes and nice pictures, this CD is a lost masterpiece that's been found again. Hooray! $25.00 + postage

Chants R&B Live 66 CORD-061
Collectable 12" vinyl on the Corduroy label featuring Mike's first band, Chants R&B, absolutely live at Christchurch's Stagedoor in 1966. John Stax says - "It is one of the WILDEST, most
exciting LIVE albums I have ever heard." That actually may mean something to some of you - now all you need is a record player and you're away! Unfortunately, we don't sell record players, but we do know people who do. This item is currently out of stock, but when it's in stock it's a very reasonable $20.00 + postage

Ugly Things - Various Raven Records RVCD-26
Another Raven compilation with loads of rare tracks from 60’s bands including the Missing Links, Purple Hearts, Pink Finks, Masters Apprentices, Mike’s first band, Chants R&B and Bill’s first band The Lost Souls (this is before Bill had a moustache even!) make this a very special crappy record. I've gone to a lot of trouble to list all the acts and songs on this CD, so
check them out if you're interested. Or even if you're not interested. $20.00 + postage

Wednesday Night Live At The Clifton Hill - Various - Clifton Hill Records CHR-001
Spectrum's contribution to the Clifton Hill Acoustic extravaganza. Ironically, Spectrum were as un-unplugged as can be on the night, and their performance of the otherwise unreleased Rocket Girl is electric in every sense. Other performers on the CD include the Stovetops, the band sometime Spectrum keyboardist, Simon Burke, plays in regularly - when he's not playing with Something for Kate that is.. All the acts and tracks are listed, so
check them out. This CD sells in the shops for $25.00 but we can do it for a piffling $20.00 + postage but it's currently out of stock.

The Cutting Edge Of Society - Life As We Know It - Advantage Australia AA001
Commissioned by Advantage Australia, this song features the enormous Life As We Know It band with Gerry Hale’s mandolin,
banjo and fiddle lending a country-ish feel to a thought-provoking song. Never to be released, it’s a must for collectors at a disconcertingly cheap $5.00 + postage (I know you're never going to buy this, even at that price, so why not just download the mp3? You'll get a good talking to for nothing).

No Thinking T-shirts Now that the Gonz T-shirts are, well, gonz, what we have for your T-shirt collection is this versatile No Thinking T-shirt. Printed on front and back, with the No Thinking logo prominent on the front, and the Volcano Records logo writ large on the back. In heavy cotton and in real sizes - M and XL - all sold out in the other sizes. Why versatile? Well, it's no more versatile than the regular everyday T-shirt really, except it's a No Thinking T-shirt, which means, whatever the situation, it requires absolutely no thought at all to whack it on - and lovin' it! Not surprisingly, this beauty is $10.00 + postage (see How to order your CDs & T-shirts at the top of this section).

Under The Covers.. (This is actually a fine historical record and coffee table style BOOK)
Spectrum contemporaries lan McCausland (who designed Spectrum's Milesago album cover), Ed Nimmervoll (Go-Set and
Juke) Graeme Webber (photographer) and Steve Malpass (graphic designer), are all featured in this gorgeous book. Mike and Bill persuaded them to design the SPILL jacket, and now are offering the Under the Covers book to their readers. So here it is – at a few dollars less than recommended retail even.. $35.00 + postage

This month's feature CD (see previous months' CDs)
The Pardoners - Indulgences (See video)
This feature has been allowed to languish due to total lack of interest on my behalf, but I was jolted out of my apathy upon receiving my reviewers' copy of The Pardoners latest from Glyn 'Hoover' Mason - and then actually putting on to listen. My concentration was heightened with Spectrum concurrently tossing out another EP and I'm sure Sam will be delighted to hear that I'm deeply depressed at the quality of intention and execution on his and Glyn's 'baby'. But don't take my word for it - go to The Pardoners' site and buy yourself a copy - you'll be delighted..
